Leilani Holiday Blogging - Week 2 - Day 2 , The Roaring 20's

Summer Learning Journey

Week 2 , Day 2

The Roaring 20's

Activity 1 - Popular Culture - The Silent Movie

The 1920s saw a massive surge in the number of people going to the movies. Huge new cinemas were built in both Auckland (The Civic Theatre) and Dunedin (Empire De Luxe).  The most popular type of movies showing at local NZ cinemas were ‘silent’ films. Gold Rush is an example of an iconic silent film. It features a famous actor named Charlie Chaplin.

Watch the trailer for Gold Rush. On your blog, tell us what you think the movie is about. There are no words spoken movie so you will need to pay careful attention to what the actors are doing! Do you think you would enjoy watching a silent film? Why/Why not?

Even though that I couldn't be able to watch the trailer. I am sure that it would be very nice movie and trailer. After reading a little text about what this movie is about and looking at some images I think that the movie would scary. It say's that Charlie Chaplin was going to the Gold Rush but then he get's trap in a small cabin. He try's to get his way out but he didn't get out until later on. So after reading that I think that it would be weird but it would also be a very cool silent movie to watch.

Activity 2 - Art Deco

In the 1920s a new artistic movement emerged in New Zealand (and around the world). It was called ‘Art Deco.’ The picture above is a classic example of an ‘Art Deco’ piece. Take a close look at the painting. Do you like it?

On your blog, give the painting a rating out of 5 stars (1 star = terrible painting, 2 stars = pretty bad painting, 3 stars = okay painting, 4 stars = good painting and 5 stars = amazing painting). After you’ve rated the painting out of 5, tell us why you gave it that rating.

Right: Self Portrait By Tamara de Lempicka

I am going to be very honest. I would rate this beautiful painting a 5 stars. Because this amazing artwork has many details that make the picture outstanding. I think that this picture is very special and it is just so beautiful to look at. The lady looks beautiful and as well as the rest of the painting. The person that painted this art work must of been very proud and really happy with their work.

Bonus Activity - Crossing the Tasman

In 1928, a crew of four men flew, for the first time, across the Tasman from Australia to New Zealand. One of the men on board the Southern Cross airplane was a New Zealander named T.H. McWilliams. His job was to operate the radio in the airplane. Unfortunately, the radio stopped working shortly after take-off and the rain and ice were so heavy that the pilot, Kingsford Smith, couldn’t see out of his front windscreen. Yikes! Fortunately, the plane made it all the way across the Tasman landing in Christchurch after a 14 hour trip.

Imagine that you were a member of the flight crew. Write a poem that describes how you would have felt when you landed safely in Christchurch after such a long trip. Remember, there are lots of different types of poems, and they don’t all have to rhyme. You can read more about different types of poems by clicking here.

My Poem

It was a scary night
where we couldn't see anything
in sight,
i couldn't see outside my front window screen
then yelled Yikes!
flew 4,155km from AU to NZ
and everything went bright
landed in Christchurch it was a pretty
great flight
hopped off the plane wasn't scary
didn't scream everybody was
pretty polite.

The End.

  1. Hey there Leilani, I'm back to read your blog and I must say I have had a great time reading your poem. It is wonderful. It rhymes, it speaks about the emotions that you would have been feeling and I just love the ending, the ending is so funny.

Fantastic work, this is an incredible poem. You must have spent a lot of time writing it and coming up with the rhyming words.

Have you written any other poems before?
I would love to hear them!

    Great work as always!

    1. Kia Ora Billy ,

Thank you so much for leaving a comment on my blog.

I actually worked with my older newphew with this because I was a bit stuck. He helped me. I just wanted to be honest. But me and him worked for a long time thinking of ideas to write in this poem. It was really hard. We took a long time.

I am not too sure if I have wrote poems before but I think I have.

      Leilani :)

    2. Well it's fantastic and you've done a really great job!
