Genomics Fun Day!

Genomics Fun Day!

Today team 5 got the opportunity to do genomics fun day with Glen Innes and Glen Brae School. You may wonder what we did! Continue reading to find out more!

The day started with a welcoming ceremony and both Karakia and Mahi was presented by Skye and Viliami. After we welcomed both Glen Innes and Glen Brae we all separated into groups of 6,7, or 8. My group was called “ Dynamites “ who had seven members. Skye, Calais, Rosie, Leilani, Miah, Lilo, and Candice. 

As a group during this day we got to complete different challenges and win a bunch of prizes! All challenges were quite hard to complete as genomics isn’t the easiest subject to take. One challenge we had to complete multiple questions that were given to us on a piece of paper. Now this challenge I wasn’t quite involved in as the answers to those questions were hard to find as my brain wasn’t functioning.

After all challenges we got to win different prizes! Our team the dynamites got top prizes as we completed the questions first with the most points.

Overall this genomics fun day was quite surprising! Thank you to all the teachers who organized this genomics day, everything was planned so well and everything turned out fun and exciting!

K-pop!

This week for our Inquiry we got the opportunity to learn and understand k-pop. Mrs Stone taught room 5 how to learn k-pop and what trainees do before becoming a professional k-pop star.

Mrs Stone presented us a video of the trainees and what they go through. As a trainee they starve, they have to be a specific weight, and they can’t eat too much or too less.

Once we understood the k-pop industry we got to learn a k-pop dance ourselves. In a group of five we learned ddu-du-du-du by Blackpink. The practice part of the dance was extremely fun because we went through so much decisions. Once we learned a k-pop dance we got to perform to a bunch of girls.

One highlight from k-pop class was learning to dance a different way in front of girls.

What Makes An Effective Leader?

This week we focused on explanation writing. This piece of writing was based on what makes an effective leader? Our tasks was to list three reasons why and give an example. Once our planing was done and complete we had to write a introduction,, three paragraphs, and the conclusion.

Should Te Reo Maori be compulsory in New Zealand schools? Yes, I absolutely agree with this questions! But why? Maori language is the original language that was born here in New Zealand, it can help with understanding and learning more languages to speak to others, and it can increase career opportunities! And here are the reasons why.

New Zealand, home town to all Te Reo Maori language. So shouldn’t the kids of Aotearoa speak this Maori language? Absolutely! It can teach younger children history or the native language that is used throughout New Zealand and was used every since the very first people set foot on this country. Te Reo Maori can also be beneficial for students in multiple schools and can increase the population for Maori people.

Te Reo Maori is a simple language that is easy to understand and learn, it’s also similar to other languages. As learning Maori it can help you learn and understand other languages without a big hustle. You would also have the ability to understand Maori and you can teach others this language as well. Students can learn about the relationships between different words and structures. 

Maori language can increase many career opportunities. Having the ability to understand and speak Te Reo Maori you can get more opportunities and options for jobs. And many jobs want staff who can understand Te Reo Maori so it can help towards communication with customers.

So maybe the Maori language should be taught in schools! Maybe it should become compulsory for many students to understand and speak!

This week we focused on plant cells and what are inside them. Once we understood about plant cells we collected all information we knew onto a doc to remember them notes for later. Why do my parents send me to school?

My parents send me to school to learn and socialise with people so once i'm grown and mature I will know many facts and I will understand how not to be a snob. They also send me to school to have a better future so I can become a teacher and understand many facts about many different things to teach to younger kids. They also want my education to be set at a high standard.

Why do I attend school?

I attend school to get a better education and make new friends. At school I need to learn new things so when I become a teacher I can teach kids important things in life.

Persuasive Writing: Being The Youngest Sibling Is Cool!

Persuasive Writing:

Are you the youngest sibling in your family? Or have you ever wanted to be the youngest sibling? It may seem cool being the youngest be it totally isn’t and here are MY top three reasons why.

Have you ever been compared to your older sibling (S)? Well it’s extremely annoying and you would never want it to happen to you! It’s frustrating, especially when your parents always compare you to someone else older. See being the most youngest isn’t as cool as you think. 

Have you ever wondered why your older siblings can hang out with their friends and you can’t? Well that thought is always in my mind. Being the youngest your parents NEVER let you hang out with your friends. Like yeah I maybe be the baby but I'm nearly thirteen years of age. And yet you still don’t let me hang out with my friends! We will always be too young to hang out late after a school disco. 

Does your older siblings embarrassed you in front of your friends? Well mine does! I can’t understand why our older siblings have to be such an embarrassment. Once my best friend came over to my house and my sister showed her some extremely embarrassing baby photos! Gosh why can’t she just be normal!?

Being the youngest isn’t as cracked up to be because you are always being compared, you never get to hang out with your friends and your always getting embarrassed. Do you want freedom? Well being the youngest isn’t going to give you freedom. 

Should Everyone Learn More Than One Language!?

Kia Orana, Talofa Lava, Kia Ora, Hello, Bon Jour, and Ni Hao! Did you understand what I just said? If not then maybe if everyone learns more than one language we can create more population! And understand more words in different languages to relate to others.

Creating Projects:Have you ever came upon an amazing looking project but! It's in a different language? It sucks yeah I know, but how can we prevent this annoying accident? Well if everyone learns and understands a new language maybe this accident would not happen as often. This way gives others more of an opportunity to explore a project of yours and clearly understand it to share with others.

Making stronger connections:Mandarin Chinese, English and Hindustani are the top three most spoken languages in the world! There is a 50 percent chance you will come upon one person speaking either one of these languages. But to avoid this awkward situation may be learning one more language can be more beneficial.

Job opportunities:Having the ability to speak and understand two languages gives you more of an advantage towards job seeking. Communication in workplaces is extremely important, especially if you working at an international office who are considering bilingual as a high priority.

Learning more than one language can give you more of an advantage towards international projects, making stronger connections and job seeking. Maybe you should try this out?

Zebrafish!!

Walt: To understand Zebrafish.

Task Description:
Last week for science we were focusing on Zebrafish, why? Well since Zebrafish has close cells as humans we wanted to look further into Zebrafish. From this task I have learn't that Zebrafish has similar cells in their pancreas as humans, which makes us similar to Zebrafish more than Monkeys.

De-Extinction!

Bringing back extinct species is not worthwhile

Science. Scientists. De-extinction. How can these all lead to “ Oh let’s bring back extinct species! “ I really have no clue! All though extinct species may be cool but where are they going to live? What are they going to eat? Who is going to look after them? Well! This article will inform YOU why we SHOULDN'T bring back extinct species.

Health:

There is a down side about de-extinction! Extinct animals can carry retroviruses, which can lead to a massive breakout around the world. Usually cells convert DNA to RNA, ( a ribonucleic acid is a polymeric molecule. ) but! With retroviruses the process goes backwards. RNA to DNA, crazy right! Viruses can move at a fast pace, even faster than thought. Especially if these viruses are fast at reproducing. Now this is a reason why extinct species shouldn’t be brought back to life.

Environment:

More than 99 percent of the 8.7 million species have all died out, crazy right! Well this must mean each species has died at different times, and after those times our earth has had a huge change effect. Which must mean all food and environment must have changed and so those species wouldn’t be used to the new food and environment. So how can they live? Well I'm not sure either! I guess de-extinction isn’t a good idea after all…

Animal Welfare:

Scientists can use species for a solely human purpose, they have the ability to harm those species, not a great plan at all. If we decided to bring back extinct species, there shouldn’t be any harm towards them because these species are not bought to be studied but brought back to enjoy life.

To create a persuasive writing. Based on bringing back extinct species is not worthwhile at all. This piece of writing is helping others understand why I don't support de-extinction, do you support de-extinction? 

Is It Alive?

Walt: for a specific purpose

Is it alive?

All living things move in some way, a pencil on the other hand can not. Movement is important in life as you need to move to different places. But! As a pencil all you must do is write. But is it still alive? The answer is NO! Pencils have no type of way of moving, but if being controlled by a human it can move.

Respiration is the next life processes. Respiration is a chemical reaction that happens to release energy from food. All living organisms breathe and at a normal pace to keep alive. Pencil’s don’t have a nose or mouth to breathe in and out of, so they have no type of way of respiration which leads to a non living organism.

Sensitivity. The ability to detect changes in the environment around us. All living organisms have sensitivity to detect changes, as a pencil it doesn't have sensitivity. Pencil’s don’t need sensitivity but some pencils are created to have sensitivity like pencils that are used on screens.

All living organisms start from small things like eggs, and seeds that grow into bigger living organisms. Pencils actually grow smaller exactly the opposite to how other living organisms grow. This is because you use a pencil to draw.

The fifth life process is reproduction. Reproduction is the ability to reproduce babies to create generations. There is asexual reproduction and sexual reproudction. Pencil can’t reproduce, their made to draw but not have babies.

Living organisms excretion, getting rid of waste inside of your body. This is to release gas or waste from your body to clean the inside to keep healthy. Pencil’s don’t have waste inside of their body’s to get rid of. They can shed once sharpened but that’s basically not excretion.

The very last life process is the most important process to keep alive. Nutrition. Food is one of the very most important sources on this world. This is because food has nutrition that keeps all living organisms alive and healthy. But does pencils need nutrition? The answer is no! The reason that backs up this statement is that pencils don’t need nutrition and it can’t eat any sort of food. Pencils are made to do specific things but it wasn’t made to eat.

This week we have been focusing on the seven life process, this can also be called " Mrs Gren. ". Our task this week was to understand the seven life process clearly, and write a following piece of writing that included information about what we understand about the seven life process. But there's a twist! We got the opportunity to choose an object in class and see if that object was living or not by using the seven life processes!

What am I?

What am I?

I am red and juicy! Many people enjoy me in smoothies, treats, and for many occasions. I am slightly cheap at the shopping market! BUT! It depends on how good looking I am! You can find me at a large field underneath large green bushes! I can be hard to find especially if you want me nice and juicy. I’m yummy, tasty, and really juicy! You can’t go wrong with me! I’m the best fruit out here, no one can beat my juiciness!

I can come in all sizes, but the big ones are the best! I have white dots around my body that gives a weird texture in your mouth when you bite me. I can be found everywhere, it’s hard work finding me though. I can also be a reward in ice-cream!

Today we got to create a quick write about what am I? Our task was to choose a fruit or vegetable and write a description about that fruit or vegetable we choose! 

M&M Craziness!

Walt: Write for a specific audience 

Have you ever tried to break a guinness world record? Pisirina, Eden, Delijah, and Leilani attempt to break ONE guinness world record! They tried to eat 21 M&M in one minute, but! There’s a twist, they had to be blindfolded while eating M&M with chopsticks! Crazy right.

The four girls tried multiple strategies to eat 21 M&M in one minute. But how did they get to this stage? Mrs Tapuke ( a loving teacher. ) provided the materials the group needed to complete this record. These materials included a large pack of tasty M&M , a few chopsticks, bowls and of course blindfolds.

All four girls had a bubbly emotion as they prepared and practiced to break a guinness world record. Each girl had a chopstick and tried their best to eat as much M&M’s as they can WITHOUT a blindfold. As time went by the challenged had begun! Delijah ate 12 M&M’s with a blindfold! Their top record! This was their highest record of eating the most M&M’s.

Pisirina, Eden, Delijah, and Leilani all enjoyed attempting to break a guinness world record. Each one of them enjoyed working as a team and getting the opportunity to eat tasty M&M to break guinness world record.

Our Fishie Assembly!

Walt: To let others understand what a immersion assembly is. 

Immersion Assembly

Our first day was full of bubbly and happy emotions during all events we did. On this exciting day we got the opportunity to attend an exciting immersion assembly!

Each year group presented a presentation to explain what each year group will be focusing on this term. Team 5 is focusing on how are all living organisms connected. As for the rest of our school they’ll be focusing on examining underwater creatures.

Year seven and eight students will be doing science and learning new information about underwater creatures. As for the team five teachers they presented a song about cells that connect each living thing together. The song that the team five teachers presented was extremely exciting it was also unique as other team teachers only presented a presentation.

This term I'm excited for many journeys coming ahead. Mostly excited to learn many facts about living creatures.
