Week One : In the beginning -
Activity 1 - The First Settlers
It is very true that the first people to settle in New Zealand are people that came from Polynesia. Most people think that they arrived in New Zealand about 700 years ago. They all had to learn to be together , work together as a team and they eventually formed their own culture which is known as Maori. Maori has traditional dances , specking , living and culture.
Reading of Maui -
The story of Maui is all about his brothers saying lots of excuses for Maui to not go fishing with them. So Maui try's to impress his brothers and show them how it is done. Maui ends up catching a huge fish and his family is very proud of him and they all say that he is a good fishermen. Maui's brothers were shamed. Reading Link Here.
Three Facts That I Think Is Interesting About Maui -
1 , Maui is a very kind and smart man. Lots of people would trust him for the way he is. To other people.
2 , Maui can look after his family by feeding them and choosing the right decisions.
3 , Maui does represent his family he also makes them proud.

Activity 2 - Setting Sail
When people came to New Zealand lots of them must of been very brave. Because they had to leave their homes and find a new place to live at. They also had to travel on a waka all the way to New Zealand.
Our task is to image our self on a waka. We need to write a letter to our love ones back at home.

Bonus activity - Waka Ama
These day's people still use waka's. But instead of using it for people to got to place to place they use it for waka ama. If you are wondering what waka ama it is people having competition in the waka. Boys and girls compete each.
Waka Ama Video -
Yes I would like to do Waka ama. Because it would be super cool to exsperiance doing Waka ama.
Hey there Leilani! Thanks for all your hard work in completing the first activities of the Summer Learning Journey!
ReplyDeleteWell done, I think you have written some very interesting facts about Maui and the type of person he was. I am sure the giant fish will feed his family for a long time. I have barely caught fish bigger than my hand! Have you ever been fishing? You need a lot of patience!
Thanks, look forward to hearing your reply!
Billy
Hey Billy ,
DeleteThank you for checking out my blog for SLJ. I am also sure that the fish would feed everyone in his family. I have never been fishing but it would be very cool but I have no patience.

DeleteHey again,
DeleteYeah I have been fishing a few times but I don't have much patience either. I give up after a few minutes. It's fun fishing with a big net though.
Billy
Hey again Leilani, I have really enjoyed reading your letter you have written imagining you were on the voyage to New Zealand. It must have pleased your family to read that you are OK and the trip was safe. I would be so worried about the trip. It would be scary if there were any storms or rough weather.
ReplyDeleteHave you ever been in a canoe or a kayak? It takes a lot of strength. They are quite similar to a Waka except they carry only 1 or 2 people.
Thanks, Billy
Kia Ora Billy ,
DeleteThank you so much for leaving a comment on my blog.
Thank you , I just came up with this idea and I think I did okay.
Yes I have been in a Kayak but not a canoe. I have been in a Kayak at a camp that was held in the year 2017. Close to the beginning of the year. Yes it does take a lot of strength but it is also very fun.
Wow I have no idea that it is like a waka!
Leilani :)
Hey,
DeleteI know what you mean! It gets very tiring very quickly. It's nice and relaxing going for a kayak when the weather is nice, the wind is low, the waves are steady. Otherwise it can be horrible!
I have fallen out a lot of times too!
Billy
Thanks for completing the bonus activity as well Leilani! It is pleasing to see how motivated you are even after school just finishing!
ReplyDeleteI like your positive attitude towards giving things a go like the Waka Ama. What do you think you would find super cool about it? Do you think it would be difficult or easy? Hopefully you are a good swimmer!
Thanks, Billy
Hey Billy ,
DeleteThank you so much for checking out my blog post fr SLJ. Yea it's a bit crazy how I have the energy to do this wonderful holiday blogging program. I think that it would be super cool because I have never did waka ama and I would be a great opportunity to do it. I also think that it would be very difficult because when I watched the video it looked like they got tired but they had to keep going so that they didn't let their team down. Ohh and I am a very bad swimmer I can't swim at all but one day I would be able to.
Leilani
Don't worry I am not a good swimmer either! I swim like a dog.
DeleteHi leilani it's me Levonah. I really like how creative your blog post was especially your letter. I hope to see more creative blog posts from you. keep up the good work. From Levonah
