DAY 3: Awesome Animals

Activity 1: Fantastic Beasts [4 points]

In New Zealand we have many unusual animals. One of the most unusual is the kiwi bird - a bird that does not have wings and can not fly. Pretty strange, eh?! J.K. Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter books, has recently written a new book about strange or unusual animals called ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.’

For this activity, please watch this cool book trailer. Year 7 and Year 8 students in South Auckland, New Zealand helped to make it. Once you have watched the video, use your imagination and create your very own beast. What does your beast look, smell, feel, and sound like?

On your blog, post a description of your beast. Use interesting adjectives (describing words) to tell us about your beast.

Here I have my beast. My beast is not very a beast. But I got inspired by the beauty and the beast. The face I got from the beauty and the beast and the rest of the body I got from the Little Mermaid. I added a identification about himself ( Ricky. )

Activity 2: The Secretive Skink [4 points]

We have a number of small lizards (geckos and skinks) living in New Zealand. One of the least common is the Chevron Skink. According to the Department of Conservation, Chevron Skinks live mostly on two islands - Great Barrier Island and Little Barrier Island. These islands are ‘animal reserves.’ Very few people, other than staff working for the New Zealand Department of Conservation (DOC), are allowed to live there. The DOC staff are called ‘Rangers.’ Their job is to protect the wildlife (animals and plants) living on the island.

Would you like to be a DOC ranger and live with the animals on Great Barrier Island?

On your blog list three pros (good things) and three cons (bad things) about working as a DOC ranger. At the bottom of your post, tell us whether you would like to be a DOC Ranger or not.

I would LIKE to visit Great Barrier Island and DOC. This reason is because it sounds fun and great. I would also love to see how everyone works around there and see how the island is. It sounds like both Great Barrier Island and DOC would be a fantastic trip!

Activity 3: The WWF: World Wildlife Fund [10 points]

In 1961, a number of people came together to start an organisation called the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). The main goal of this organisation was/is to protect life on earth. Hundreds of WWF staff work in countries all over the world trying to protect our planet and the animals who live here. To learn more about their amazing work, click on one of the two video links below.

Once you have watched the video, go to your blog and, using full sentences, tell us:

2) What the WWF is doing to help the animal.

Number one: The name of the animal the WWF is working to save.

Well I only got to watch one video as the other was restricted. I could only view clip one. Moving onto this question. The WWF is working to save seals cubs from being harmed.

Number two: What the WWF is doing to help the animal.

The WWF organisation is helping the baby cubs as well as the mother and farther seals get ready for the mother seals to give birth. They are helping the family of seals by making snowbanks for the cubs. This reason is because without the snowbanks mostly all of the cubs die. But , with the snowbanks most cubs stay alive. This reason they snowbank helps them out is because when they mother seals give birth to the cubs they are protected by the snow surrounding them. The snow is protecting them from predators and other harmful things that can harm the cubs. 

Number Three: What , if any , success they have had protecting the animal.

Well the WWF has had many success protecting all sorts of animals. But for the seals they have helped out many mother and farther seals by building them snowbanks to give birth. Usually without these snowbanks most of the cubs die which is EXTREMELY bad! So the WWF have done such a fantastic job by keeping our world protected and also by doing that with our animals as well.

Task Description:

Yes! Holidays are over and we are back on with more Summer Learning Journey activity's. Today's post is all dedicated to that. In this post we are set to learn about our animals. First activity we got to create a beast which was inspired by the new J.K rolling book. My beast name is Ricky , Ricky is a very unique beats and has his own talents. Moving onto the second activity , here we did a pros and cons poster. We got set to write three of each , pros and cons , but I only wrote two. For my poster I laid out two circles name pros and cons. Then I compeled with the two pros and cons inside of the circle. For the third activity we got to write three facts about two clips that we watched. The second clip that they gave I couldn't watch it. So I did the work off the seals. Hopefully you all have loved my writing or are just about to love my writing. Thanks for reading and we would see you's all later!

Activity 2: Fabulous Ferns [4 points]

One of the most common plants found in New Zealand forests is the fern. It is a special, iconic symbol of New Zealand. You will find pictures of ferns on the jerseys of many famous sporting teams in New Zealand, including the New Zealand All Blacks.

Did you know that many of these teams also have the word ‘fern’ in their name? Use your best researching skills to find three New Zealand sporting teams who use the word ‘fern’ in their title.

On your blog list three sports teams that have the word ‘fern’ in their title. Beside each team’s name, post a picture of their uniform. Then, at the bottom of your blog post tell us which of the three uniforms you like best and why.

My favourite uniform out of all three teams:

My thoughts on these uniforms look GREAT! But of course I have too choose one that I LOVE. Well my favourite is personally the Silver Ferns uniform. This reason is because it looks very flexible and while playing netball that is one very important thing to have. In other sports too! Plus it nice and simple and there is a fern going across their uniform.

Activity 3: Weird and Wonderful [10 points]

New Zealand is just one of many countries that has amazing plants and trees. In fact, the African desert is home to some pretty incredible plants, like the cactus. Some cacti are able to survive on as little as 3 millilitres (ml) of water a day. Wow!

Let’s imagine that you are given a cactus for your birthday. To keep it alive, you must give it 3 ml of water every day.

Over one full year, how much water will you need to give your cactus plant?

On your blog, tell us how to solve this maths problem. You can write your answer in words, use a Sketchpad image, or post a video explaining how you would figure it out. Be sure to give us your final answer in millilitres (ml).

Task Description:

Welcome back fans! Today's post I have posted one of many activity's from the Summer Learning Journey website! These few days have been so much fun because of these very cool activity's! In today's post I  have done day one's activity two and three. Activity one I have already posted which was one of my recent post. In today's task for activity one we got to do some research about which sports team who represent New Zealand have ferns. Besides their team names. My three teams I did were the Silver Fern , Black Caps  and the All Blacks. The second activity was all about math's. We needed to figure about how many water we would need to keep a cactus alive for about over one year. I did one year and for one day the cactus can drink about 3 ml. Activity 1: Giants Among Us [4 points]

New Zealand has a really special environment. Many of the plants and trees found in New Zealand are not found anywhere else in the world. These plants and trees are endemic to our country.  In New Zealand, one of the largest and longest living endemic trees is the NZ Kauri tree. Kauri are mainly found in three regions of New Zealand: the Coromandel, Auckland and Northland. The largest Kauri tree in the country is in the Waipoua Forest in Northland. It is called Tāne Mahuta. Some people refer to it as the ‘Lord of the Forest.’

Thousands of people go to visit Tāne Mahuta every year. Would you like to be one of those people who got to see Tāne Mahuta in real life? Why or why not?

Would I like to visit the tallest Kauri tree ( Tane Mahuta ) in New Zealand? 

I would LOVE to visit the Tane Mahuta located in the Waipuna Forest , in Northland region. The tree is the very tallest Kauri trees ever to live! That is the VERY reason why I would LOVE to visit the Tane Mahuta. I have heard of this tree throughout books , writing's or even in conversations , and now here! Tane Mahuta's look very tall! Now , the reason why I would like to visit the Tane Mahuta tree is because I would LOVE to learn about it habitats and other very fun facts about this wonderful tree! Hmmm , I bet that most of you all reading would enjoy to learn facts about the Tane Mahuta tree. Continue reading to find out more information about this terrific tree!

Fact one: Well first of all the Tane Mahuta is the tallest Kauri tree in New Zealand. The Tane Mahuta tree is located in the Waipuna Forest which is located in the North side of New Zealand! The Tan Mahuta tree is standing at about 13 trunk / 51 meters high. Very tall am I right.

Fact Two: What does Tane Mahuta mean? Well the word ' Tane ' is the god of the forest. Tane's name is the god of peace and beauty. That is the most information I got about the name.

Task Description:

Day two of Summer Learning Journey hear I come! Today's post is dedicated to the Summer Learning Journey activity's! Today's post I have completed day one's , activity one's task! For day two the day is called Forest Life , and as for the activity it is named Giant's Amount Us. In this activity it includes us searching through a virus amount of sites to learn about the tallest Kauri tree , Tane Mahuta. Here I had to explain if I would like to visit the Tane Mahuta and why we would like to visit the Tane Mahuta. I wrote if I would want to visit the Tane Mahuta and why. I also left some facts about the Tane Mahuta which would be helpful to everyone! So without further a do you may start reading , or you have already read all of my day one activity. DAY 1: In the Beginning...

Activity 1: The Legend of New Zealand [4 points]

According to Māori mythology, much of Aotearoa New Zealand was formed when Māui, a powerful demigod, fished it out of the sea. Legend has it that Māui created a magical fish hook from the jawbone of his grandmother and that one day he took his hook, boarded a boat, and rode out into the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Once at sea, he threw his magical hook into the water and caught a fish. This ‘fish’ was actually the North Island of New Zealand! In honour of this legend, the North Island of New Zealand is sometimes referred to as Te Ika a Māui or ‘Māui’s fish’ and the South Island of New Zealand is sometimes referred to as Te Waka a Māui or ‘Māui’s canoe. Task one: ( Choose MY top three favorite fun facts found on Tourism Nz website. )

Fact one!: While I was searching throughout all of the top 20 facts I found one of the facts about Aoteaora that I found very interesting , is , New Zealand was the very first country to give both male and females the rights to vote in the election. Thanks to governor , Lord Glasgow for signing a form to let both genders/others to have the rights to  participate in the election , this date was held in 1893. This reason I found this fact very interesting is because if Lord Glasgow didn't sign the form for all genders to have the rights in all elections that wouldn't have been far. Besides I think that everyone above the correct age should have participated in the election way before the form was signed for all genders to vote.

Fact two!: Moving onto this second fact I found engaging is that the Auckland Sky Tower is the MOST tallest structures in the southern hemisphere. The height of the Sky Tower is standing at 328 meters high! This fact is very engaging  because first of all 328 meters is SUPER tall! As well is that the Auckland Sky Tower is apart of New Zealand which makes the citizen of New Zealand proud of our country because our land is growing popular! I love my country.

Fact three!: Throughout Aoteaora there are many cities , one of them are know as Gisborne. Did you know that Gisborne  is the very first city in the world to see the sun rise , this reason is because Gisborne is  496.3 kilometers away from the International Date Line. Neither did I! Gisborne is located on the east coast of New Zealand. I found this my favorite fact because Gisborne is such an amazing city in New Zealand. One day in my life I would love to visit Gisborne for the very first time and it would be extremely beautiful!

The country of New Zealand is made up of two main islands – the North Island and the South Island. Approximately 77% of the New Zealand population live in the North Island. Many of these people (including our Summer Learning Journey design team) live in Auckland city. Auckland is a great place to live with lots of amazing parks, beautiful waterways and stunning scenery to enjoy. It is also a busy, vibrant city with many cafes, museums, galleries and theatres to visit. I feel lucky to call Auckland my ‘hometown.’

Now it is time to think about your hometown. What is special about where you live? On your blog, describe your hometown. Be sure to include lots of describing words (adjectives) in your post.

Activity 3: Ice, Ice Baby [10 points]

Image Attribution:Antarctica is the world’s coldest continent. Even though it is made up of ice, it is also the driest continent in the world. In fact, it hasn’t rained there for nearly 2 million years! It is home to many animals such as whales, seals, birds, and fish. There are no permanent human residents (people who live there all the time) in Antarctica, however scientists do visit and stay in Antarctica for a while to study it.

This year the airline, Air New Zealand, filmed their safety video in Antarctica. They used some fabulous actors from Hornby Primary School in Christchurch. Just like on aeroplanes, we also need to keep safe and be smart online. We need to think about the type of information we are sharing online, who we are sharing information with, and how to have a positive digital footprint.

Task Description: 

Hmm , it's the summer holidays , and we do I usually do in the summer holidays?  That's right! The Summer Learning Journey! This holidays i'm going to be participating in the Summer Learning Journey! Throughout all of the weeks in the summer holidays I would be blogging. Not just any ordinary post , it's going to be a Summer Learning Journey activity! Which means everyday of the week we received a activity that makes us learn about different things. Today's day is called In the Beginning... Well this sounds interesting. Day one contains three activity's. Activity number one we have to choose our top three favorite facts off a website and write that fact in our own words. The second activity was we got  to explain what our home town is like. I explained how where I lived we are all proud of our culture. I took this activity another step ahead by explaining one of my favorite places in Glen Innes!  Last but not least , our last activity was where we got to make a copy of a foot and inside that we we needed to insert tips our how we stay cybersmart or how we leave a digital footprint online. Now that all of the spoilers that i'm going to tell you for now. Thank you for reading this really long task description. Leilani - Year six camp at camp Bentzon!

All of the year six campers from Pt England School got to camp at Camp Bentzon located on Kawau Island! This experience was the best! Continue reading to find out what the year six campers from Pt England School got up to!

As we were travelling on the Kawau Kat Ferry to Camp Bentzon , excitement rushed through my bones. Not long later we arrived at Camp Bentzon and I was extremely excited from what we were about to do ( apart from walking up Killer Hill. ) After we piled our luggage nicely on the deck we got prepared for our walk for the Killer Hill! At first I thought that Killer Hill was going to be much easier but as we started our walk on Killer Hill we weren’t even half way and most of us were so tired! We all climb up Killer Hill with tiredness and as we were out of breath we stopped to take a break ( which felt like heaven to me. ) Not many minutes later we got to walk down to the beach and we got to play and have a brake before we climb back down Killer Hill. Mr Sommerville showed us how far he could throw a rock , which was pretty far no lie. Also some of us got to skim rocks into the water! After our long break we headed down back to Camp Bentzon. Not lying but Killer Hill was so steep , that most of us nearly feel! ( I think a lot of us fell. ) As the day continued we got into our cabins , in my cabin I had Chance , Nevayah , Paige , and Tatia. All us girls set up our room. Throughout the day everyone just chilled and ate dinner as well as lunch. Later that day it was night time. Then we watched a EXTREMELY fun movie called “ The Princess Bride “. This movie was excellent , but some don’t agree with my opinion. I think that the Princess Bride was the best movie ever!

As us girls woke up pretty early and started to get ready the next day. We heard girls voices echoing from down the hallway travelling up to our room. Paige opened the door and we all saw some girls walking down the hallway for i’m not sure why! ( Actually I know why , it was girls going to the toilets and I did to. ) All a sudden we heard the Bugle and EVERYONE sprinted down stairs for our first walk up on the fitness trail. Let me say that some kids ran up the fitness trail but it was hella tiring! Once we walked back we ate some delicious breakfast! After breakfast we got ready and started our first activity of rotations! As for Bentzon A our first activity was Sailing ( Optimus. ) , for Sailing I found it pretty fun and since we all listened to Peter on how to sail none of us tipped over! While we were Sailing Peter was on his Pontoon so he would keep us safe. Overall Sailing was my favourite activity out of all of them. After Sailing we ate some biscuits and apples for our snack. Then we moved onto our next activity , and as for Bentzon A we moved onto Confidence Course which was quite easy. Mr Jacobson took the Confidence Course and he gave all of us a memo. “ Hug your mumma “ was Mr Jacobson memo because as you climb up to a large log to get down you got to “ Hug you mumma “ to be able to get down. The Confidence Course was extremely fun and easy. My most favourite activity for the Confidence Course was when you could climb onto a VERY thin rope and you MUST walk onto that rope across to the other side where you can stop and hop off. ( Hopefully that was helpful. Also a helpful tip that would help me and you out is that after every activity we either get a lunch or a snack before our next activity. )

After our wonderful lunch Bentzon A went to the Burma trail while everyone else went to their own activity. What is a Burma trail? You might think , well a Burma trail is where you get blindfolded and you hold onto a rope which leads in a circle and back to Camp Bentzon. For the Burma trail it was my most not favourite activity because it was pretty dangerous because there were trees everywhere surrounding us and the rope was quite close to the trees that we could bump into them! ( I did a lot of times. ) Moving on , we all followed the rope and nearly to the end of the Burma trail I took my blindfold off because Tina ( our helper AKA Wivern mum AKA Tina. ) told us to take the blindfold off because it was VERY dangerous and I REALLY wanted to take off my blindfold. After another snack Bentzon A moved onto Orienteering. In Orienteering we received a map that includes clues so that we could find the letters. All of the letters for Orienteering were hidden all over Camp Bentzon. Also another item we received when we were doing Orienteering was compass that helped us with directions , but we didn’t really use the compass. The purpose of our Orienteering was to find all the letters in order and make four words. All of our four words were Kayak , Rafts , Optimus , and the last word I forgot. Overall in our second day for our first rotations I found that all of the activities for our rotations my favourite was Sailing. That reason was because the weather was beautiful and I found Sailing EXTREMELY fun. Especially since I got to Sail with my friends. This night we got to play I think three or four rounds of Spotlight and I won one round with many of my friends. Others won more than one and some won all of the rounds we played!

As the next day came we packed our bags and I got ready for Abseiling , I was super scared for Abseiling. After breakfast we headed for Abseiling. While we were putting our helmets and harnesses on I look at the top of where we were going to Abseil. In high up in the sky I saw the top of where we were going to Abseil. We were about to start Abseiling it end up starting to poor down with rain! Everyone was so excited and God just decided to let it rain ( which was fine. ) So Tha-zin , John , Levonah , and I went back to where our Cabins where. We stayed there for a while and me and Levonah went back to Abseiling. Not long after it was my turn. As I was climbing up the side of where we Abseil I felt so nervous because our steps that were helping us climb to the top where wide apart which made me worried , but I eventually arrived at the top. Now all I needed to do is climb back down , which was the most scariest thing ever! It was so slippery that I feel and my face crashed into the wall! After Abseiling we had a snack and got ready for Kayaking. As we were tighten our life jackets I felt super excited because I LOVE Kayaking! While we were Kayaking we Kayaked fair away to find Stingrays! But unfortunately we didn’t seem to find any Stingrays! Which was fine with me because the weather was beautiful and we got to splash each other! Overall Kayaking was very fun and exciting!

After another wonderful lunch Bentzon A first activity was Raft building! As for this activity you got to build rafts with tanks , ropes to create a raft that can float in the water until yourself or others can reach this grey floating thing in the water that everyone jumped off. All of the girls in Bentzon A team we versed the boys and none of us won. What we first built was a frame so that the tanks would be easier to fit underneath our frame. Unfortunately our idea didn’t go as planned. Instead as we placed our rafted into the water tanks came out from underneath of frame which made the wood frame sink. After we built our rafts we put everything away and went for a swim. I choose to jump off this floating thing in the water but as I was climbing onto it I accidently cut the top of my legs from all of the Oyster! But I recovered. After our afternoon tea Bentzon A did Bivouac. As for Bivouac you go into the woods and build you a hut. Your hut must be able to not get water inside it and your hut must we standing up well so your stracture won’t fall. Our hut we were planning to build didn’t turn our great we were planning to create this use scracture that went to tree to tree with many sticks of the side as well as a large door. The others made a wonderful hut that didn’t really fit both of them. After our last activity we had free time , and had our last practice for our year six camp concert. As the time came to perform we all gathered chairs outside underneath the beautiful sky with bright stars in the sky. Each group performed their own unique performance , but Bentzon performance was OUTSTANDING! We performed the fresh prince of bel air and the song “ I want to dance with somebody “. As for our first song we dance to the song then it transition to “ I want to dance with somebody “ we ran out to the audience and grab some teachers. Other our year six campers some campers got awarded some chocolate for king and queen ( Levonah and John ) , leaders and other things. Also the group that had the best dance was Bentzon A! Then we all feel asleep.

Thank you to all of the teachers for taking care of us going there , at the place , and coming back. We all appreciate everything that you have given to us. Also thank you to our parents for paying our fees and letting us go to camp. This was my favourite camp ever! Another thing I would like to say is sorry Tina for dealing with us even though we were the best and I know my jokes were the best. Overall I would like to thank all of the teachers , helpers , and family’s for helping out for year six camp , without yous all we wouldn’t be able to attend our year six camp!

At this year six camp I enjoyed every single thing that we did for our activities as well as sleeping in our cabins. But my most favourite thing that we did for activities was Sailing and Kayaking because we got to be out in the water for a long amount of time , having fun! Another thing that I loved besides activities was sleeping in our cabins or going to other cabins. Because in my friends cabin it was super funny and we made a lot of memories. While we were at our year six camp I learnt that only things you think are scary are just in your head , as well as try your best and don’t give up. Thank you for reading I know you enjoyed!

Today's task I wrote about our recent camp. The year six camp to Camp Bentzon. I wrote about our camp which was pretty fun , I wrote every single thing that we did at our camp and every single thing we did on those days. I even wrote a thank you to our helpers/teachers/family's and many paragraphs with a lot of sentences.  

Leilani - Cave Art Animation.

Task Description:
This task is my term four animation. In this animation it is about cave art. Which means we needed to draw a animal and just make a cave art animation. My cave art animation is all about a polar bear family getting attacked from a tribe that is hungry and want's to steal  their food for dinner. Eventually the tribe and the polar bear family gets to share the food with each other. Enjoy!
