DAY 5: Blink and You’ll Miss It
Activity 1: Towering Timbers [4 points]
There is a long and rich history of logging in New Zealand. Logging involves cutting down trees. The people who cut them down are called loggers. The trees that they cut down are sold and used to build things (eg. houses), to make products (eg. paper), and to generate (create) heat and power. Over the past two centuries, many of the trees in New Zealand have been cut? down by loggers.
Left: NZ native forest Right: A logged forest
Some people like logging because it creates jobs for the loggers and generates money for New Zealand while others are against (opposed to) logging. Many of those opposed are worried that logging will damage the environment. It might also force animals who live in trees (eg. owls) to find new homes.
What do you think about logging?
On your blog tell us whether you think logging should be allowed in New Zealand. Be sure to provide at least two reasons to support your argument.
Would I like logging aloud in New Zealand?
This is a very hard choice to make because when cutting down trees you get more products. But when you do cut down trees you are also taking away animals who live in trees find another home. Well I need to make a choice , and that choose would be no I think that we shouldn't cut down native trees. Trees are a very important need we all need in life to help us breath and to keep our animals save in where they belong. As for houses we don't need trees we could all use metal , shipping containers , other things that we could build houses with. We could recycle plastic to create more products without using our beautiful trees. So my two reasons that are going to support my statement is number one. To save our world from ending , then secondly to leave our trees to our animals and we can use other materials to replace what trees make for us.

Activity 2: Living on the Edge [4 points]
While it can get quite cold in New Zealand, it rarely drops below freezing (00C). Most of the time the temperature in New Zealand is pretty mild. This is not the case in the tundra. The tundra is an area of land (biome) that is cold, dry and completely treeless. Did you know that the average temperature in the tundra is -280C?
Over the past few years, however, the temperature in the tundra has been rising and the weather has been changing. Let’s imagine that your teacher decides to take you on a class trip to the tundra before the weather changes too much and you aren’t able to go.
On your blog, write a letter to your best friend or a family member telling them about your trip to the tundra. To earn full points your letter must have a greeting (eg. Dear…) followed by 5 – 6 sentences of information about what your experience.

My Letter:
Dear Jahzara ,
Here in Tundra it's not quite how I thought it was when I was looking at some picture of this place. The weather is super cold and there are no trees! How ridiculous. But the best part of this trip was that we got to go climb up a huge mountain and ski back down. As well as everyday we got to wake up to a beautiful view of the mountains and one day we got to hear some little birds singing early in the morning! Wish you came along with us to Tundra , but were heading back and I can't wait to meet with you after.
Kind regards,
Leilani.

Activity 3: Going, going….gone [10 points]
Over the years, scientists have made some surprising discoveries. One of
these discoveries is that we have entire cities (e.g. Jakarta, Indonesia and Venice, Italy) that are slowly sinking into the ocean. Scientists believe that, one day, the cities will disappear completely under the water. Yikes!
Some of the residents (people living in the cities) have taken pictures of their neighbourhoods and written stories about their lives in order to make a record of what ‘life was like’ in their city before it disappeared.
Let’s imagine that New Zealand was going to sink to the bottom of the ocean next week (Eek!). Before it sinks you are asked to write a blog post telling people what life was like in New Zealand in 2018.
On your blog, post a description of life in New Zealand in 2018. Please remember that the people who read your post will have never been to New Zealand or even seen a picture so it is your job to ‘paint a picture’ of New Zealand using your words. You can also post pictures, if you wish. Be sure to fully attribute the pictures.

Task Description:
Day five is now done with week one! So glad that we have now finished week one! The first week of Summer Learning Journey activity's. Here for activity one we had to write if we should let loggers chop down our trees. Second activity we had to write a letter to either a friend or family member about our class trip to Tundra. Then as for the last task we had to write something to people who don't live in New Zealand what it was like to live in New Zealand before it will sink. How sad! Bye.
Kia orana Leilani,
ReplyDeleteThanks for the letter. It's great to hear you had a good time. The weather is usually cold. Your very lucky you got to ski down a nice snowy mountain and had a amazing view just when you woke up!
Anyways,
Thanks for the letter
Your friend!
Jahzara
Kia Ora Jahzara ,
ReplyDeleteThank you for commenting on my Summer Learning Journey activity. I am so glad to hear that you have enjoyed my letter to you.
Cheers ,
Leilani.
ReplyDeleteAta mārie Leilani,
I’m Dani, a blog commenter for the Summer Learning Journey. I normally spend my time in the Kaikohekohe cluster but I have had the chance to check out some amazing posts in the Manaiakalani cluster! I look forwarding to reading and commenting on Manaiakalani learner’s blogs!
Congratulations for finishing the first week of the SLJ! Have you enjoyed SLJ so far? It’s awesome that you have thought about ways New Zealand could reduce it’s logging by replacing wood for building houses. I agree that there are so many empty shipping containers to build houses. Have you seen houses built from shipping containers? They are very cool, here’s some great examples: http://www.viralnova.com/shipping-container-homes/
Would you ever considering living in a house made from shipping containers? I think I would! One of my friends has just built a tiny house and it would be the same size as living in a single shipping container.
It sounds like you are having an amazing time visiting a Tundra. I think the cold would be surprising for me too! If you had the chance to visit a Tundra in real life, who would you want to take with you? I would want to take my sister so we could explore the treeless landscape together, skiing down the mountain sounds like an awesome activity to do as well!
It would be very sad if New Zealand is slowly submerged into the Pacific Ocean. What do you think you would miss about New Zealand the most? For this task you need to describe what life is like currently in New Zealand. You could talk about our beautiful landscape filled with forests, beaches and mountains. You want to paint a picture in someone’s head about what New Zealand is like now so it’s a good idea to use adjectives to help describe our country. I would love to award you the full points for this activity but I can only do that once you have edited your post. Comment below once you have changed it so I can come and check it out!
Blog ya later!
Dani
