Leilani - Summer Learning Journey - Day 2: Fabulous Flora!

Walt: To finish week two day two.

DAY 2: Fabulous Flora

Activity 1: Weaving a Tall Tale…[4 points]

There is a long history in New Zealand of collecting natural plants, including flax (harakeke), and using them to create cloaks, baskets (kete), mats, traps and ropes. Flax weaving is an art form. It can take years for people to perfect the art of weaving. Have you ever tried it?

For this activity, you are asked to watch a short video of someone weaving a fish (ika) out of flax.

On your blog, tell us whether or not you would like to try flax weaving. Does it interest you? Why or why not?

Activity 2: Mighty Mangroves [4 points]
Here in New Zealand we have a native tree called a Kiwi Mangrove. Kiwi Mangroves grow in shallow water (harbours). The largest mangrove or manawa forests in New Zealand are located in Northland and in Auckland. According to many environmental experts, they are one of the toughest and strongest trees in the world because they can survive in really harsh (difficult) conditions.
For this activity you are asked to think of someone who is very tough and strong. They can be someone who you know personally or they can be a character that you have read about in a book, seen in a movie, or on a television show.
On your blog, tell us about this person. Who are they? Why are they, in your opinion, so strong and tough?

Activity 3: Stranger than Fiction [10 points + 5 possible points]
Here on earth there are more than 298 000 different kinds (species) of plants. Some of these plants live on land and some live in the water. Follow this link to read about 10 of the strangest plant species in the world. When you are finished, choose two of the plants from the list.

On your blog, list three On your blog, list three similarities and three differences between the two plants that you chose. To earn five extra bonus points, post a picture of both plants on your blog..

Task Description:
Today's task I have finished another Summer Learning Journey activity. Today I am on week two day two. For day two we have been given three activity's. Activity number one is where we had to write if we would to do weaving with flax. As for our second activity we had to choose a person who we thought is very strong and write about that person. Last but not least the third activity we had to choose two plants and write three facts that have in common and three facts that they don't have in common. So that was it. ENJOY!

  1. Kia ora Leilani,

What a stunning post! I love that you have included a task description for your activity, created separate presentations for each activity, presented your response and explained or justified your choices. This represents a lot of hard work and a huge effort. Nicely done!

I particularly enjoyed the description that you provided in activity #1 of weaving. It is great that you have already tried it and made a square. I have not yet tried my hand at weaving flax but I have tried weaving with other materials (eg. robe and ribbon). It was certainly a challenge but I enjoyed it. I wonder if you will have the chance to try it again next year with your teachers at Pt England. I hope so!

I also hope that you get to see the new Dwayne Johnson movie called Jungle Cruise that is coming out next year. Apparently, Dwayne has three new movies coming out in 2019. He is one busy (and very strong) man! Did you know that he was actually the highest paid actor of 2018? My son, Aronui, has the Guinness Book of World Records for 2018 and he was reading about actors and sportsmen/women last month and told me about Dwayne. That is quite an accomplishment given how many actors there are in Hollywood these days!

Well, I better head away as it is lunch time here at my house.

    Talk to you soon!

    Rachel :)

  2. Kia Orana Rachel ,

It great to hear that you have enjoyed my work for today. Today this has been a very hard activity to do but I also think that it also very good.

Wow I never knew that Dwayne Johnson is making a new movie and that he is the highest paid actor of 2018! Your son Aronui must learn many facts of famous people in his Guinness Book Of World Records! One day I would like to have a chance to read all of the records that book has in hand!

Have a wonderful lunch and day ,

    Cheers ,
    Leilani.

  3. Kia Orana Leilani,

Thank you for your lovely message. Aronui does learn a number of cool facts from his Guinness Book of World Records. I really love it when he shares them with me because I often don't know anything about the topics that he tells me about. It is such a great way to learn new and interesting things!

I hope that you had a nice day today. We just finished up a tasty family dinner. It is my partner, Andy's, birthday tomorrow so I made a big meal for everyone. It was a lot of work but totally worth it because Andy had a great night!

Hope that you also have a great night!

    Bye for now,
    Rachel :)
