DAY 3: First You ‘Sea’ Me, Now You Don’t…

Here in New Zealand we have many amazing and unique sea creatures, including penguins. The blue penguin, or kororā, is particularly special because it is the smallest penguin in the entire world! Blue penguins are typically found on the east coast of the South Island in places like Oamaru but they can be hard to spot as they rarely leave the water. If they do come onto land it is usually at night, when most of us are sound asleep! That’s because they are nocturnal. Not all of us, however, sleep all night. In fact, some people love to stay awake late into the evening. People who like to stay up late are called ‘night owls.’ Are you a night owl or are you an early riser, like me? I typically wake up every day around 6:00 a.m. and jump out of bed, ready to start the day!

On your blog, tell us whether you are a night owl or an early riser. Then, tell us about the rest of your family. Are they the same as you? .

-------------------------

Here I have created a presentation about am I and my family either Night Owls or Early Risers. To be honest in the world there are many different people that wake up VERY early or got to sleep VERY later. As for my family they go to sleep either very early or very late. Continue to find out whether my family or early risers or night owls.

Activity 2: A Local Delicacy [4 points]

Whitebait is a very special fish in New Zealand. It is rumoured (believed) to be a very delicious fish. Some restaurants in New Zealand make dishes that feature whitebait, including whitebait fritters. Have you ever tried whitebait fritters? They are a favourite dish of many of my friends. I, personally, prefer foods from places like Mexico and Italy. Pizza and nachos are two of my all-time favourite foods! In fact, I often make homemade pizza with Aronui on Friday nights using the same ingredients (pizza base, tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese, sun-dried tomatoes, chicken, red onion, basil and feta cheese) each time.

For this activity, please choose a favourite food and find a recipe for it.

On your blog, share a list of the ingredients that you need to make this food. You must type out the list of ingredients yourself (and not simply copy and paste it from a website) to earn full points.

------------------------

For today's recipe I have given you my all time favourtie recipe for deep fried chicken! My family and I really enjoy having this as a wonderful treat as for dinner. This is the recipe that my family and I like to use for cooking deep fried chicken. The reason why I like to to eat deep fried chicken is because of the crunchiness of the skin and the beautiful flavor from the inside! Yummy!

Activity 3: The Midnight Zone [10 points]
One of these creatures is called the ‘Colossal Squid.’ A colossal squid can weigh as much as 495 kilograms (kg)! Here in New Zealand, we have a full sized colossal squid on display at Te Papa Museum in Wellington. It is the only specimen of its kind in the entire world! This squid weighs approximately 500 kg. In 2018, a team at Te Papa decided to move the giant squid from one area of the museum to another. Deep in the ocean, far below the surface, lies an area called the ‘Midnight Zone.’ It is called the midnight zone because it is always dark or ‘pitch black’ in this area. Much of the deep sea has yet to be explored by humans, however, we do know a little bit about the creatures that live here.
Let’s imagine that the average adult can lift 25 kg and the average child can lift 15 kg. How many adults and children will it take to move the giant squid into its new room at Te Papa? [Note: There is more than one right answer to this question.]
On your blog, tell us how you will solve this maths problem. You can write your answer in words, use a Sketchpad image or post a video explaining how you would figure it out. Be sure to give us your final answer. .
----------------------
1: Squid is 500 kg. So i'm going to half 500 kg to split between the kids and the adults. This answer is 250 kg each.
2: Figuring out how many adults there are needed.
First I got how much a adult can lift which is 25 kg. I got that amount and timed it by four which is 100. After I got this answer I still had to get 250 kg so I did 25 kg times four again and got 100. Then I added 100 + 100 kg together and got 200. Lastly I timed 25 x 2 = 50. Then I added the 200 and 50 together and got 250 kg. Now I needed to figure out how many adults are needed. I got ten.
3: Figuring out how many kids are needed to carry the squid.
Here I had already knew that a child can carry 15 kg each. So I timed 15 kg by seven to get 105. I got this answer by timing 15 by 5 and then timing 15 kg by two and got 105 kg. Next I still needed to get to 250 so I added 105 kg + 105 kg together and got 210 kg. Then to the 210 I added 15 kg and got 225 kg. Then I was going to do 15 kg x 2 but I realized that if I did that would make 30 which would go over 250 kg.
4: Fixing things up.
So next I went back up to the adults took 225 kg and added 25 kg to 225 and got 250 kg! Then I added one more adult to the ten adults that I got. So overall you would need 11 adults and 15 kids.

Task Description:
For today's task I am back again doing another Summer Learning Journey activity. Today I have worked on day three activity one , two and three! Activity one we had to make a presentation or poster about if I and my family or night owls or early risers. The second activity we had to share our favourite food recipe. Last but not least the third activity was a math activity about how much kids or adults would be needed to carry a squid to one place to another. Enjoy!t

  1. Hello Leilani, my name is Billy and I work with Rachel and the team on the Summer Learning Journey. I did some commenting on your blog last summer - maybe you remember?

Anyway, I have just been viewing and enjoying your presentation about night owls and early risers. I can completely relate to the part where you spoke about changing between the two. When I am working I have to get up very early, at around 6am or even earlier. So I guess that makes me an early riser - although, I only do it because I have to!

On the weekend I love a good sleep in, and I often stay up late at night. I suppose it all depends on the circumstance. Sometimes I find I do better work late at night, but like you, I often watch too many movies and that tends to keep me awake. Too much screen time isn't good for your sleeping habits.

Since people who stay up late are called night owls, what animal do you think we could give to the early risers?

    Thanks, Billy.

  2. Kia Ora Billy ,

Thank you very much for commenting on my Summer Learning Journey week two day three. I have been also enjoying the Summer Learning Journey teams comments. Last year I had such a fun time reading the teams comments as well and I do remember you commenting on some of my activities as well!

Your question was since people who stay up late are called night owls , what animal do you think we could give to early risers? Well that is hard. I have been thinking to give the early risers a animal which is a Roster. This reason is because rosters are always up super early crowing in the morning waking up others. So night owls would be owls and early risers would be rosters? Not still sure but there my idea.

    Cheers ,
    Leilani.

  3. Kia ora Leilani,

Activity 2: A Local Delicacy: Deep fried chicken, yum! Who doesn't like that?! Thanks for making the poster, your description on how to make this dish is really comprehensive and I enjoyed reading it. For the future, consider that you could've added a picture of the dish as well in your poster as this would made this post very eye-catching and mouthwatering.

Activity 3: The Midnight Zone: You did a wonderful job here! I like how you took your time to explain how you did solve the problem step by step. Your understand of place value strategy is great because you used it extensively to solve this problem. Is Maths you favourite subject? My one used to be arts as I always loved to be creative.

By the way, I think you idea about calling the early risers roosters is great! 💚

    Kia kaha,
    Patricia
