Leilani Holiday Blogging - Day 2 - Its All In A Day's Work

Summer Learning Journey

-

Week 1

Day : 2 - It's All In A Day's Work

Activity 1 - House Or Home

In the 1800s, most Māori lived in villages called pa. Each village had many buildings – kauta where people cooked, pataka where they stored goods and wharepuni where the Māori slept. A traditional wharepuni had a thatched roof and walls made of timber, fern, rushes and bark. Look at the picture below of a traditional wharepuni. Does it look like your house?

---------------

No the image of a beautiful Wharepuni. My house dose not have carving.

On your blog, compare the wharepuni to your own home. What are two similarities and two differences between a wharepuni and your house?

----------------------------

1 , The equipment that they used for the Wharepuni is similar to the equipment that my house is made out of. My house is made out of wood , metal and much more.

2 , Back then they used rocks , wood and leaves to cook. But now we have stoves , bbq , ovens and Weber.

--------------------------------------

Activity 2 - The Rules Of Engagement

During the early years in New Zealand, men and women would often marry at a young age. Women were expected to have babies and remain in the home caring for their children. Few, if any, left home in search of work. Men, on the other hand, were expected to work outside of the home.

These days, we don’t have the same strict expectations about work. Girls and boys can choose their own path in life. In fact, I was lucky enough to go to university and to follow my dream of becoming a teacher!

What is your dream job? Draw a picture of yourself doing your dream job and post it on your blog. You could be a doctor, an actor or even a zookeeper! I have drawn myself taking a picture of a beautiful castle in Poland because I would love to become a travel blogger and photographer one day.

-----------------------------------

--------------------------------------

Bonus Activity - Special Meals

Back in the 1800s, most Māori ate a simple diet. They ate foods that they could catch in the water (eg. fish) or grow on the land (eg. kumara). They did not have access to a supermarket to buy food for their meals! Speaking of meals, what is your favourite meal? Mine is wood-fired pizza. Yum!

On your blog, post a picture of your favourite meal. Be sure to tell us what it is and why it is your favourite. You could also include the recipe if you have it so that we can all try it!

--------------------------

My favourite meal is Chicken!

I would have chicken burgers , chicken for dinner , breakfast and lunch! But my chicken that I love is died fried chicken covered in bread crumbs. Yum!

Recipe -

Ingredients You would need :

Chicken
Bread Crumbs
Egg
Flour
Salt
Deep Fryer

Recipe :

First cut up the chicken any size you want.

Now let's start the pattern

It goes Chicken get's salt

Dip in egg

Covered in flour

Covered in the bread crumbs

And get's cooked.

We cook our for 6 minutes but it depends of the size.

  1. Hi Leilani,

Ruby here from the Summer Learning Journey! It's great to see that you've been working on these activities. Well done!

Activity 1: Those are some good differences you have thought of. Can you think of any similarities? Some of the similarities I thought of were that both my house and a wharepuni have windows.

Activity 2: How cool that you want to be a teacher! I want to be a teacher too and I get to be one next year. It's a lot of fun and no day is the same! Who inspired you to become a teacher? My Mum inspired me because she was a teacher too.

Bonus activity: Chicken is so yummy! I agree with you that there are so many things you can do with chicken and that's one of the best things about it. That recipe looks really yummy! I have't made crumbed chicken before but I've eaten it at a cafe and at a takeaway shop. I always enjoy it so maybe I should try your recipe.

I look forward to reading more of your blog over the summer.
    Cheers,
    Ruby.

    1. Hey Leilani,

      Great similarities! Good work :)
It's great that your teachers have inspired you to want to be a teacher. I'm glad that you've had fun in your classrooms and want to bring that to new classrooms of your own!

I can't remember which cafe I ate the chicken at. I think it was somewhere up north when I was on holiday. Do you make crumbed chicken at home?

      Cheers,
      Ruby.
