Leilani Holiday Blogging - Day 3 - It's All In The Family

Summer Learning Journey

Day 3 - It's All In The Family

Activity 1 - The More , The Merrier

victorian family.jpg

In the 1800s, most families were pretty big. In fact, many parents had an average of seven to nine children.  Imagine that you were a child in the 1800s and you had nine siblings.

On your blog, please tell us how you would feel. Would you enjoy being a member of such a large family? Why or why not?

I would feel okay with it but I love to be in a nice , little quite spot. So I think that having nine siblings would be very crazy. I just not into loud noise I just love being quite. I would be very crazy.

Activity 2 - Acknowledging Ancestry

All of us are members of a family. Some of us have large families and some of us have very small families. When I have the opportunity to talk about my family and my ancestry I sometimes choose to use a pepeha. It is a very special way of identifying who I am and where I come from. There are many different versions of pepeha but most provide people with information about who you are and where you come from (i.e. your whakapapa). Use the template provided below to prepare your own unique pepeha. If you need help please watch this short movie clip on preparing a pepeha.

My Pepeha

Ko Tainui Te iwi
Ko Ngatiwhawhakia Nga Hapo
Ko Waiti Te Marae
Ko Leilani toku inga
Ko Annie toko mama
Ko Aubrey toko papa
Ko Stacey toko teina
No re na tena ko to tena ko to tena ko to ka toia

Bonus Activity Fun Family Facts -

Everyone’s family is unique. What makes your family special? Choose three people close to you and ask them what their two favourite things to do in summer are.

On your blog, write two fun facts about each person. For example, my Nana plays the bagpipes!

Sister - She likes to sit down and watch movies

Nephew - Play Basketball and other sports.
Me - I like to do holiday blogging

  1. Hi Leilani,

My name is Willy and I'm one of the commenters for the Summer Learning Journey programme. It's great to see you joining once again for the summer holidays. I like the effort you've put in to your post, and also, how you also added the actual activity before putting in your input.

    Great enthusiasm! Keep it up!

    1. Hi Willy ,

Thank you so much for leaving a comment on my SLJ. Yea I am doing the Summer Learning Journey once again this summer.

  3. Good morning Leilani, well done you have completed lots of activities and to a high standard.

I liked reading about your opinion on whether or not you would enjoy having nine siblings. I have to agree with you - I enjoy my own quiet space to relax and unwind, so I am not sure I would like nine siblings. It would be a little hectic and crazy! You might not get as much food too.

    Do you have many siblings?

    Thanks, Billy

    1. Kia ora Billy ,

Thank you so much for leaving a comment on my SLJ.

I do have a sibling which is my older sister.

      Leilani :)

  4. Hey Leilani, thanks for sharing some interesting information about your family members. I like how you said that your nephew enjoys playing basketball, that's really cool.

I can tell that you enjoy holiday blogging, what else do you like?

    Thanks, Billy

    1. Hey Billy ,

Thank you so much for leaving a comment on my SLJ.

Another thing that I like to do in the holidays is spend time with my family.

      Leilani :)

  5. Hi Leilani,

Ruby here from the Summer Learning Journey team. It's great to see that you've been working on these activities. Well done!

Your pepeha looks great! Have you written it before? It looks as though you may have. Knowing our pepeha is important I think. It allows us to acknowledge our ancestors and also helps us to understand ourselves better as well.

I look forward to reading more of your blog over the summer.
