Leilani - Activity 2: The Seven Sisters

Activity 2: The Seven Sisters [4 points]

In the middle of winter, a very special cluster (group) of stars appear in the sky over New Zealand. This cluster is called the ‘
Matariki star cluster.’ It re-appears in the sky each May/June and signals the start of the Māori New Year. Many songs (waiata) and stories have been written about the cluster. One of these is called ‘The Seven Stars of Matariki.’ It was written by a New Zealander named Toni Rolleston-Cummins. She is from Maketu. Click here to listen to Toni read her story.
On your blog, write a short summary of the book. What was it about? Try to summarise the story in 6-8 sentences.

------------------------------------------

There once lived a young boy living with his seven brothers. They all were very engage with their looks , that they wouldn't marry any women because they thought they were much prettier. One day the seven brother were hungry so they went haunting for food for dinner. As they were bouncing low trying not to be seen they heard beautiful voices coming from a part of the forest. They followed the beautiful sound and see women with blonde hair singing aloud while brushing their long hair. The seven brothers feel in love but the youngest , he tried to convince his brothers that these ladies were not wroth it. His brothers ignored him and took all seven sisters back to their village. The six brothers who brought the beautiful sisters home always went fishing as the seven laddies didn't like anything but sea food. One day the youngest brother felt that something was wrong about the seven sisters , so he hid behind a tree and waited for the seven sisters do something , he saw seven birds flying out of the whare ( house ) so he followed them. He transformed himself into a bird , sat on a tall tree and heard what the seven women where talking about. They whispered to each other that they would make the seven brothers starve. The youngest brother told the rest about what he saw and heard. The next day the seven women went out again they trapped in a net , told a very special man who is very magical and he took them very , very far away for being mean people. Every winter the special man lets the seven sisters shine.

Task Description:

Welcome everyone! So in today's task the Summer Learning Journey team have set us kids to write a 6 - 8 sentence about the Seven Stars Of Matariki. As seen I have wrote much more than 6 - 8 sentences. I think that I have wrote around 13 sentences , this reason is because this magical story is hard to be written in the given amount of sentences. Because it needs to be explained well. This task we very fun as I got to hear and write the Seven Stars Of Matariki , this book is such a magical story. Hopefully you have enjoyed today's task and I will check in with you all next time , bye!

  1. Kia Ora Leilani,
I am amazed by how much you have written for this story. It is ok that you have written more than the given amount of sentences because that means people wont have to go searching for the story. Well Done!

I feel bad for Metai because he knew better than his brothers when he told them that the girls weren't worth it. I like how you described the men and what they thought of themselves. It was very descriptive and you used nice vocabulary.

Next time you could include the part when the brothers turned ugly and skinny, just because of their wives.

  2. Kia Ora Leilani,

Wow! Spectacular story Leilani, I am impressed on how well and how long this whole story turned out to be. You have basically summarised the entire story, don't you think? Because I was in the mood of reading stories I heard that you had completed the Seven Sisters activity, so this is why I am here.

I incredibly love how this story was summarised as you not only re-wrote it but you also added in some other punctuation, describing words and loads more sentences. It's really sad to hear that Mitai's brothers didn't listen to Mitai which was why his brothers no longer went hunting, looked after there gardens and was suddenly turning ugly and was skinning a lot. They also starved as the wives never ate Seafood but were able to eat other types of food. Mitai knew his brothers wives were not the rightful wives for his brothers as he knew they were not to leave there village and was treating them like they were all brothers and sisters. How disappointing of them to not listen and treat people bad.

Do you think Mitai's brothers should've left the sisters alone, Or No?

Overall I love this incredible recount of the Seven Sisters, you are such
a fantastic writer, I can't wait to see more writing from you soon.

    Cheers,
    Hinerangi

  3. Hi Leilani!

This is a great summary of the 'Seven Stars of Matariki'.

    Did you enjoy this story?
I thought Miti was a pretty cool character - I have read a few different Matariki books but I think this one and the 7 kites of Matariki are pretty awesome! Have you read the 7 Kites of Matariki?

Have you learnt much about Matariki in school?
I know that when I was in school there was only 7 stars of Matariki but I heard recently that it is now counted as 9...
I found this article here that talks a little bit about it:
    https://www.tvnz.co.nz/one-news/new-zealand/nine-stars-not-seven-academic-says-many-getting-matariki-wrong?variant=tb_v_1

    Awesome summary Leilani, ka pai!

    Nga mihi,
    Ellee :)
